Our Foundation represents an extraordinary pool of intellectual capital and experience. Driven by passion, enthusiasm and a desire to see a better Africa, our team is as committed as our collective challenges are broad.

Our board and management team are our most valuable asset. Including some of the most respected voices on HIV AIDS and health in the country, our aim is to fully utilise our board and management team to achieve a Summer for All.

Our founding donor has further committed to the goals of the Foundation by appointing its own CEO to the board. This ensures the Foundation receives top-of-mind support from our donor and the strategic thrust that a major, listed company can provide, without jeopardising independence.

Our board
Our board directly oversees the Foundation and ensures a fully independently run Public Benefit Organisation. Each board member is dedicated and actively involved in the strategy and implementation of the organisation's objectives. This powerful asset is employed at the strategic level in order to interact with governments and social partners in South Africa, Africa and across the globe. Our board includes the following directors:

Peter Doyle (acting Chairman)
Peter is the previous CEO of Metropolitan Holdings and is the president-elect of the Actuarial Society of Southern Africa.

Wilhelm Van Zyl (donor appointee)
Wilhelm is the current CEO of Metropolitan Holdings.

Fatima Jakoet (donor appointee)
Fatima is a current director of Metropolitan Holdings.

Prof. Wiseman Nkuhlu (independent)
Prof. Nkuhlu is a former head of the NEPAD secretariat and chair of the Development Bank of South Africa.

Clint Bartlett (independent)
Clint is an industry analyst specialising in corporate social responsibility.

Our Management Team
Day-to-day operations of the Foundation are seen to by Foundation management. Here too our organisation has a wealth of financial, actuarial, NGO and developmental experience.

Our management team includes:

Chan Makan (CEO)
PhD, MBA, BSc, BPhil, FIAC, FInsD

Chan has both corporate and NGO management experience. He has been a primary health care advocate since 1983 and was a co-founder of the Health for All Resource Centre based at the Rondebosch Cottage Hospital. His area of interest in the NGO sector has been poverty alleviation with specific focus on youth and community programs addressing substance abuse.

Nathea Nicolay (program director: health)
B.Com (STB), B.Com (Hons)(RAU), AIA, MASSA

Nathea is an HIV and AIDS consultant specializing in statistics, financial management, impact assessments and strategic direction. She has published various articles in financial and HIV publications and has written several papers on HIV and AIDS related statistics. Nathea is an Associate of the UK Institute of Actuaries and a member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Lizelle Esterhuizen
HR Dipl (Northlink), HotelM Dipl (Int City & Guilds), SDF (INSETA) 

Lizelle employment history speaks of her determination and excellent work-ethic. She has acquired skills in communication and adaptability amongst diverse groups and cultures.  She brings an excellent range of varied skills ranging from skills development, employment equity and has a keen interest in issues around transformation and change.
